Functional Testing
Most of us are familiar with the blood tests our doctors often request to confirm or eliminate a diagnosis. Functional testing, using blood, urine or stool samples, can give detailed information about a number of different markers which can be help us understand the root cause of certain symptoms. These often offer more insight into how our body’s systems are interacting with one another, giving us information as to which aspects of your diet and lifestyle need attention. However, testing is not always necessary or useful and will only be recommended if we believe it will enhance the clinical picture.
Hormone Tests
Unlike in some other countries, women’s hormones are not checked regularly in the UK so this makes interpreting the blood test results challenging when no baseline is available. In the UK, the NICE guidelines state that women over the age of 45 do not require a blood test to confirm their perimenopause status and this can be done by symptoms alone. Under the age of 45, your GP may check your FSH levels. This should be done between days 1-3 of your cycle (during the first few days of your period). FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) regulates the menstrual cycle and helps in the production of oestrogen and progesterone. A higher level can be used to indicate menopausal symptoms. However, as most women continue to ovulate during the perimenopause, FSH levels remain “normal” and so often the results don’t offer much value. Whilst FSH levels shouldn’t be the defining factor as to whether you are able to access HRT treatment, it can be difficult to challenge that opinion.
The DUTCH test is a urine test which can give detailed information about the interplay between your hormone levels and how your body is metabolising various hormones. It is suitable for women using HRT. It can be very helpful to provide a detailed picture of hormone levels and can be repeated at different stages for comparison.
The thyroid gland can begin to become less efficient with age. This gland, which sits in the neck, acts as the hormone control centre of the body. If it isn’t functioning correctly, the production and excretion of many of the body’s other hormones will start to be affected. Eliminating an under- or over-active thyroid can be an important first step in understanding the root cause of any hormone-related symptoms. Based on symptoms, a basic thyroid test can be requested via your GP and more comprehensive options can be arranged privately.
Nutrient Testing
Based on symptoms, it can be important to check for nutrient and mineral levels, specifically iron and vitamin D, during this time. These can be done through your GP or privately via our clinic. There are many test packages available and only those relevant to your health profile will be recommended.
Stool Testing
Stool tests offer insight into the microbiome profile of the gut, allowing us to examine the differing strains and populations of microbes. Imbalances in the gut can lead to problems in removing excess hormones from the body which can exacerbate symptoms and can affect our weight, mood and sleep patterns.
As testing is not required for every client, the costs of all tests are in addition to the package costs. Please contact us for more details.
